史料
與查士丁尼時代史料極為豐富相反,7世紀是史料極為匱乏的階段。這一點在伊拉克略以後這段時間特別明顯,正是由於史料奇缺,這個時期又被合理地稱為拜占廷歷史的黑暗年代。
伊拉克略的偉大功績為皮西迪亞的喬治(e of pi-sidia)所歌頌,他是聖索非亞教堂的執事,在大教長塞爾吉烏斯(sergi,610~639年在任)任內作教堂的神器管理員和檔案管理員,他是傑出的詩人,後世拜占廷人將他比喻為希臘悲劇作家歐里庇得斯,在其大量作品中,有使用三音步抑揚格詩寫作的多部史詩。其中特別重要的是描述伊拉克略於622年對波斯人的戰爭,以及626年抵抗阿瓦爾人進攻君士坦丁堡的戰事,還有就是歌頌最終推翻波斯人的《伊拉克略》頌詞。[1][2]所謂《復活節編年史》的作者是伊拉克
